Bookkeeping and controller services in Washington, DC.

Clean monthly books and controller-level insight for growing businesses in the District, Northern Virginia, and suburban Maryland. Remote-first, on your schedule, with the same team every month.

Built for how Washington actually operates.

Washington runs on federal contracting, trade associations and nonprofits, professional services, and the consulting firms built around all three. The books carry things a general ledger elsewhere never sees: indirect rates, grant restrictions, deferred membership revenue.

Across Arlington, Alexandria, Tysons, Bethesda, and Silver Spring, owners hit the size where a close on a set date matters more than another spreadsheet — usually the first time a prime, a funder, or a lender asks to see the numbers.

Common industries here: government contractors, associations and nonprofits, professional services and consulting, medical and dental practices.

Washington's records problem is the contract

Revenue here is usually earned against a contract or a grant rather than a sale, so the month it lands in cash and the month it belongs in are rarely the same. Cash-basis books on a cost-reimbursable contract or a multi-year grant will show a profitable month that never happened.

Indirect cost pools are the other one. A contractor whose books cannot separate direct from indirect cannot support a rate, and finds that out during an audit rather than before it. The chart of accounts has to carry that structure from the start; rebuilding it backwards through a year of history is the expensive version.

Frequently asked

Do you serve businesses outside metro Washington?

Yes. We support clients across the DMV — Arlington, Alexandria, Tysons, Bethesda, and the wider region. Engagements run remotely with calls on your schedule.

Do you handle tax filing?

No. Averan is not a CPA firm and does not file returns. We keep the books in the condition your CPA needs and work alongside them. Tax filing stays with them.

Can you work with our existing bookkeeper?

Often, yes. Some Washington clients keep an internal person for day-to-day entry and bring us in at the controller level above them.

What software do you work in?

Primarily QuickBooks Online and Desktop, where we hold ProAdvisor certification. We also handle migrations between platforms.

How does pricing work?

Pricing is scoped to the work rather than billed hourly, and quoted after we have looked at the books. Cleanup of historical records is quoted separately as a one-time piece.
